Who can assist me with managing my Lymphoedema?

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard of treatment/management of lymphoedema

This includes evaluation, patient & family education, manual lymph drainage (MLD), multi-layer bandaging, skin care, home exercises and compression.

A certified lymphoedema therapist who has undergone a recognised 135 hour lymphoedema management certification is competent in CDT

In South Africa it is within the scope of practice of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Nurses registered with the HPCSA to provide this complete service.

A Massage Therapist whose scope of practice has been broadened with the AHPCSA may also offer CDT.

An Orthotist and Prosthetist is skilled in the application of multi-layer bandaging as well as measuring and fitting lymphoedema specific compression garments.

A collaborative approach amongst health care professionals is recommended to ensure optimal treatment outcomes. You may therefore be referred to various team members throughout the management of your lymphoedema.

Medical funders have specific requirements in order to fund lymphoedema management.

Please check with your service provider which aspects of lymphoedema management (CDT) fall within their scope of practice before commencing treatment, as this may affect whether funding is authorised.
