Finding a therapist specially qualified in the management and treatment of lymphoedema is very important. In order to treat lymphoedema correctly, safely and cost effectively, Lymphoedema Therapists require post graduate training in the Management of Lymphoedema from a recognised training programme or institute. In South Africa a Lymphoedema Therapist may be a nurse, occupational therapist, physiotherapist or medical doctor who has completed the additional training and certification in Complex Decongestive Therapy/ Complex Lymphoedema Therapy (CDT/CLT). CDT/CLT includes (but is not limited to) Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage, compression bandaging, compression hosiery, skin care, exercise programmes and other modalities. A Lymphoedema Therapist must also be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
In South Africa, according to the Allied Health Professions Council, the scope of practice of a qualified Massage Therapist includes Manual lymphatic Drainage Massage only, and does not include the other aspects of Complex Lymphoedema Therapy. However, Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage alone may be successfully used to treat a variety of other oedemas. Qualified Massage therapists must be registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa
The following listings constitute neither an accreditation nor an endorsement by LAOSA or the LAOSA Executive Committee. This list is offered for reference only. Although we do review applications from each individual, LAOSA is not responsible for quality of service or rates charged. Therapists vary in experience, expertise and skill and you are encouraged to inquire about training, background, fees for service and to verify coverage with your medical aid prior to treatment. As when making any medical decision, research your options, ask questions, then decide on the best course of treatment for you.
The "Find a Therapist List" only includes LAOSA members. Each Full and Associate Member has submitted detailed information about themselves including copies of their registration in SA and copies of certificates of completion and paid a fee to be listed. This list does not represent all Lymphoedema clinicians currently in practice in South Africa.
